FAQs

What is the difference between academic translation and general translation?

Academic translation is mainly meant for academic papers, graduation theses, book manuscripts, project documents, etc., of scientific researchers or students in various disciplines or industries. It is also for a more localized translation of websites, software, games and product publicity. We choose translators with high foreign language proficiency in the same field to ensure the accurate use of subject terms and specific jargons. General translation refers to the translation of ordinary articles, letters, applications, publicity materials, etc., that do not have subject and industry jargons, and can be translated by a regular foreign language professional translator. With both types of translations, FCE editors will edit the text after it has been translated.
How do you calculate the number of words and characters?

In the case of translating Chinese to foreign languages, the number of words is the "number of words" in Microsoft Word’s word statistics. On the other hand, if the document is being translated from a foreign language to Chinese, the calculation will be based on the number of characters. If we need to translate the text in a picture, it will need to be calculated separately because Microsoft Word’s word statistics do not include those within a picture.

If your manuscript is a mixture of Chinese and foreign languages, you will be charged based on the sum of Chinese and English words, and in accordance of the prices of the translation services. If the author provided Chinese or English terminology or reference documents for reference, the words within these references will not be calculated.
How fast can you translate? Is there a rush service?

For articles less than 10,000 words, it can usually be completed within five to 16 working days. It takes time to translate, edit, and review by the associate editor and approved by the editor-in-chief. For a longer manuscript, please consult our customer service staff. Please understand that working days do not include weekends and statutory holidays. Kindly note that there are time differences between native English speaking countries and China, plus their holidays are also different. Some force majeure may lead to an extension of the completion time, such as natural disasters, terrorist attack, etc. In order to ensure the quality of the translation, we do not advise on rush services, but if it is urgent, we can provide a rush service at a higher cost. Please contact the customer service staff for consultation.
Do we need to provide references and a glossary in both Chinese and English?

In order for the translators to ensure that the terms you use are consistent with the terms in the references, and that there are no errors in the way the terms are used, we encourage customers to upload the documents to be translated, along with a Chinese and foreign language glossary and references.
The glossary and references will not be included in the total number of words, thus will not be charged.
How to apply for free re-editing?

The process of submitting free re-editing service is as follows: 1. Log in with your account number. 2. In "Submission", Upload your revised draft, click “yes” under the quesiton of whether it’s re-editing or not, and fill in the reasons. Kindly note that the amount that needs to be re-edited should not exceed 20% of the original document. Also, please highlight the changed content with a different color or use Microsoft Word’s revision status to indicate the changed content, so that our editors can edit more efficiently. The re-edit should be applied within 12 months of the first edit. 3. After your submission, we will review it. If it meets the re-editing requirements, it will officially enter the editing process.
What are some things to consider when choosing the academic translation service?

1. The document you submit should be the final version and should be neat and clear, so that we can ensure the quality of the translation. Unclear drafts will not be accepted.
2. If the text in the picture also needs to be translated, please make sure to make a note of it when you submit the document.
